A Glass Of Water – How Daily Habits Change Your Life

Habits Are As Simple As Water

A Glass Of Water
Changing your life does not have to be a complex, drawn-out process. It can actually be likened to drinking a glass of water every day.

All you have to do is start and you will soon realise how daily habits change your life.

Water is simple sustenance. As simple as it is, however, it can save you from dying. We are advised to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.

But, even if that is not available, one glass can be very powerful.

Without it, over time, we will die. With it, consistently, we can totally change how our body performs, our health and how we live.

Drinking a glass of water every day is a highly recommended habit.

Developing daily habits like this can change your life.

Our Bodies Are 60% Water – Drink Daily

According to Wikipedia, the human body is made up of between 55% (females) to 65% (males) of water. The usual way of adding water to the body is by drinking. Water also enters the body with foods, especially those rich in water, such as plants and fish.

Have you ever noticed what happens to you when you are dehydrated? Some, or all, of these signs, may be evident:

  • feeling thirsty
  • yawning
  • feeling tired
  • dry lips, eyes and skin
  • feeling lightheaded
  • losing concentration
  • peeing infrequently
  • change in colour of pee to dark yellow

Drinking water daily and in adequate quantities will rehydrate us and ensure that we have the energy and focus required to get through our day and complete our tasks. The same can be said for daily habits.

It is said that doing something consistently for between 21 to 66 days (depending on the guru or scientific fact) makes it a habit and something we cannot live without. Think about that in the context of change and achieving different results.

Some believe that rather than days, forming new habits should be measured by repetitions. Whatever the yardstick being used it is a proven fact that just like starting with one glass of water a day, forming a new habit begins with a first step and repeated follow through.

Just Start – The Change Is Addictive

So we know what happens when we do not drink adequate water every day. But, what happens when we do? Well, this is where I prefer to anchor change, from a positive and motivating position. There is already too much emphasis on the negative.

Drinking a glass of water

Drinking a glass of water is not an analogy for me. It is a way of life. I drink a glass first thing in the morning and the last thing at night.

While drinking on a morning I take a deep breath and give thanks for my night’s rest and waking up with the strength, vigour and health I need to go through my day.

At night, before lights out and going to bed, I drink a glass of water while reflecting on my day’s achievements and again giving thanks for all that I accomplished. Water is always with me, just like exercise and meditation, which I also incorporate in simple habit-forming ways.

As soon as you start your journey towards difference begins and a new habit is being implemented. All that is required is that you start. No fanfare or a big chunk of the pie. Start simply with little manageable pieces.

There is something that can be said for addiction when you begin the journey of implementing a new, positive habit. The experiences that you feel become addictive. Like drinking a glass of water.

When you start to see, hear and feel the benefits it is hard to return to the old way.

The Mind Feeds The Body – Or Does It?

This is a chicken-and-egg dilemma. Does mind control our body or, does our body control or mind? Whilst there is a lot written on these two subjects, the jury is still out for me. I do, however, lean more towards the brain being slightly dominant.

However, I do believe that action – the physical effort we exert – works in reverse to take messages to our brain especially when it feels reward and benefit from what it is doing.

Do you know the saying: “Fake it until you make it.”? It is based on the belief that the body can have a direct impact on the mind and if we thoughtfully do something it will eventually realise a meaningful result that we eventually adopt as a way of life.

In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill penned this famous quote:

Anything the mind of Man can conceive and believe

This is equally true. As soon as you begin self-talk within your mind you can impact a changed result with your body. Starting simply with one glass of water every day. This is what an affirmation is. A brief statement or sentence that is repeated frequently and eventually starts talking back to us.

TAKE ACTION:

On a sheet of paper write down:

Remember to drink your glass of water when you wake and before bed.

Place it on the side of your bathroom mirror, over your kitchen sink or next to your television. Somewhere that you look at frequently so you will see it more than once a day. Read it every time you see it. Soon, the voice in your head will repeat that affirmation so loudly and frequently, you will have no choice but to take action.

Taking action will create a new habit and a new addition to your lifestyle.

Start With One Simple Changed Action. Repeat.

All it takes is the first step. To quote Maya Angelou: “Every journey begins with a single step.”

Every journey begins with a single step

It is my firm opinion that we have come to a place in life where we over-complicate things causing unnecessary distress. Life is and can be, simple. It is up to each one of us to determine what that breakdown is to ensure that we do not bite off more than we can chew and become inactive because we are overwhelmed.

When we start drinking a glass of water every day. we begin to see and feel changes with our body. Water hydrates us. Remember that our bodies are 50% to 65% water. By giving it what it needs to fuel itself, it returns many benefits to us:

  • removing toxins and waste from our body
  • reduces the risk of constipation
  • aids healthy digestion
  • prevents dehydration
  • improves concentration
  • raises our energy levels
  • acts as a lubricant for your joints
  • protects your spinal chord
  • regulates your body temperature
  • keeps skin (the body’s largest organ) supple and pumped

That simple, daily act of drinking a glass of water every day provides you with all these tangible benefits. When you start to see the change in your body, feel the difference in the way you are functioning and receive compliments from people around you about how you and your skin look, you will definitely not want to return to your previous habits.

Actually, you will find yourself wanting to drink more water, more frequently. I guarantee it!

Now that you have experienced your first behavioural change, you are ready to take on a new one.

Congratulations! Simply repeat the process.

Start Where You Are

Change does not have to be complicated. In my work with Clients over the years, I have been involved in highly complex change initiatives and change that appears as simple as walking a few extra steps every day to lead into running a marathon.

It must begin somewhere. That place is where you are at now. You begin where you are. Not where someone else is. Don’t look at that slender, svelte body in the photos if you are now 100lbs over weight and set that as your goal. Everything about you is different. (That body may also be shopped to fool you!)

Start where you are. Take it one step, one glass, one pound at a time. Take your first step, drink your first glass, lose your first pound. Every other goal becomes easier from there.

  1. Awesome advise Cassandra!

Yes 1 simple habitual change can drastically alter our health & well-being and our entire lives.

Although I already drink at least one 500ml BOTTLE of water every day, because of you, I’m making an earnest effort to hit that recommended 8-glass per day mark. So…

    Thanks for your reminder!

    • Samuel,

      Thank you for stopping by.
I am pleased that my article was useful for you.

Water, as simple as it is, is something many of us take for granted.
When you consider that 60-70% of our body is made up of water, you may begin to change your relationship with this simple, daily habit.

Warm water first thing in the morning is particularly beneficial.

      Keep it up!

  3. The habit of drinking water was very difficult for me when I moved to Spain as it wasn’t my drink of choice. Now I drink at least 2 liters a day. You are right in what you say about habits, they form over a period of time in doing them every day. Water is very important for our bodies to function properly. Every one feels like effects of dehydration whether they realize it or not.

You have confirmed that with your experience after moving to Spain.
      Congratulations!
Without adequate water, our body does not function efficiently or effectively.
Without consistently nurturing good habits, neither do you.
